In the vast world of Lumios, adventurers can expect to find areas to take refuge in and areas to be wary of.
Protected Zones
After setting foot outside of Marco’s Farmstead, you will enter a Protected Zone. These areas are distinguished for having settlements, cities and encampments of friendly NPCs that protect those just starting out on their adventure.

Figure 3: Attempting to Set State to Hostile within a Protected Zone
While within a Protected Zone, adventurers are unable to turn Hostile or engage in PvP. As an extra measure, City Guards will automatically move to corral and eliminate criminals spotted within these Zones.
Disputed Zones
Once adventurers enter the untamed lands outside the protected walls, it becomes survival to the fittest and combat can happen at the drop of the dime.

Within Disputed Zones, adventurers can turn Hostile and engage in PvP. Those who accumulate enough names under their belts end up criminals, chased out of the city walls to fend for themselves in the outlaw lands. There is only one place where outlaws can seek refuge, though finding it is a challenge in and of itself…

As you venture to secure this world from the claws of Chaos, your path as a criminal will lead you to face daunting struggles without the help of other Pyreborn.
Campaign Quest Instances
Have you ever wondered why you can't see your friends suddenly? Even in a party?
When running around Lumios, you may enter a transition zone. These instances can be noted by a glowing blue light that pulses over your screen. Within these special zones, adventurers will be alone and cannot call for their allies’ aid, even from within their own guild or party.
Figure 8: Entering an Instance
These instances can be exited at anytime, but it will continue to exist there until the objective within have been completed.
